A Word from the MIAA

Dear MIAA Spring Sport Official,

I begin by thanking all of you for being ready to support MIAA student-athletes for the spring 2020 season. This was a truly unprecedented time for all. I am confident that our member schools are deeply appreciative of your efforts to prepare for your work this year and every year.

Given the fact that all of you have missed the entire spring season, a few items have been addressed to support all spring officials. As part of your annual registration with the MIAA, each official paid a $10 sport registration fee. The MIAA BOD recognized the uniqueness of the canceled season and has agreed to refund this 2020 spring registration fee. We are working on the final details of the fee refund. It will be in the form of a direct refund to the method of payment submitted during the registration process. Please allow a few weeks for this to be completed.  Additionally, for those officials only working spring sports, we are looking into extending the valid background check for an additional year.

The NFHS, who publishes playing rules for most spring sports, has announced the cancellation of printing new rules for the 2021 spring season. This means that the current 2020 rule book which was to be used for this spring season will be used again in 2021. There will be no need to purchase a new book(s) for next year. Given that all of you have already purchased rule books in preparation for the current season this comes as positive news for all.

Both the Baseball Umpires Manual and the Track and Field/Cross Country Officials Manuals will be printed this coming year as they are two-year publications.

On behalf of all MIAA member schools and student-athletes, thank you for being such an important part of our competitions and a vital component of educating students through athletics.

Stay safe and healthy,

Richard Pearson

MIAA Associate Director
